Button Making in the Workshop
Join us in the Workshop to create custom buttons!
In this activity session, you can design and create wearable buttons using our button press. All materials will be provided, including colored pencils, markers, paint pens, and various collage materials. Please note that we will limit 3 buttons per participant.
This program is intended for children ages 8 and up. We encourage accompanying parents and guardians to join in on the activity!
This session is drop-in, meaning you do not have to register in order to attend the session. Space is limited and offered on a first come, first serve basis.

Sewing Club
Come to the Workshop’s monthly Sewing Club!
During Sewing Club, you can utilize the Workshop’s equipment and materials to work on an independent sewing project. Don’t have a project in mind? No worries! A select number of beginner sewing projects will be available to you during the session.
Sewing Club participants will be provided assistance and guidance, including instruction on sewing machine use, by our guest instructor, Sharon White. Workshop staff will also be available to provide assistance when possible, and we encourage club members to help each other too! We all have different backgrounds and experiences, so we’ll be learning from each other.
The Workshop will have a limited number of sewing machines available during the session that will be offered to participants on a first come, first served basis. In the event that all sewing machines are occupied, you may still participate in any aspects of the sewing process that don’t require a machine. If you have your own sewing machine, we highly encourage you to bring it with you to the session! All types of sewing projects are welcome.
Sewing Club sessions are drop-in, meaning you do not have to pre-register in order to attend the session. Space is limited! We ask that you arrive promptly at the beginning of the session in order to secure your spot.
Available materials include: sewing machines, assorted fabric, sewing needles and thread, pins, quilt batting, embroidery materials, irons and ironing boards, and much more!

Polymer Clay Jewelry Making
Join us in the workshop for Polymer Clay Jewelry Making!
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to sculpt their very own earrings using polymer clay. Don’t have your ears pierced? No worries! Magnet, keychain, and pin substitutes are available upon request. The session will cover the basics of working with polymer clay; how to sculpt, slab, upkeep and bake. Participants will leave the course with a piece of handmade jewelry.
This program is intended for ages 18+. Pre-registration is required to attend this program. The registration form will become available on Monday, June 16th at 10:00 AM on the Workshop’s webpage.

Mosquito League Unit Experience
Summer is here, which means so are mosquitos! Join Ms. Lily and Ms. Diana from the Greater Los Angeles Vector Control District to learn more about these itchy pests; get a closer look, learn how their biology works and how to protect yourself and prevent their spread. Participants will be given an activity worksheet and a giveaway item.

Explore the basics of crochet in our Workshop! Learn about different methods and techniques and what tools are needed. Participants can even get started on their own crochet project.
All materials will be provided. This class is intended for beginners with no previous experience.

In this hands-on session, you can use fabric paint to create a design on any type of fabric. All materials will be provided, including a limited supply of tote bags and zipper pouches. Participants are encouraged to bring their own t-shirts, hoodies, or other articles of clothing to paint on.

During Open Hour sessions, participants will be able to work on their own independent projects, utilizing select equipment, supplies and/or materials, including drawing, painting, printmaking, fiber arts and certain general use materials.
Open Hours are self-led, meaning participants work independently, at their own pace. Workshop staff will be available to help get set-up, distribute the materials and offer general help and advice, but will not be able to provide large group or individual long form, step-by-step instruction.
Please note that not all materials, supplies and equipment in the Workshop will be accessible during Open Hours sessions. Please see the list on the Workshop’s webpage for available resources.
Currently, these sessions are limited to individuals aged 18 and up. Pre-registration is required to attend Open Hour sessions.

The Downey City Library is launching its very own Collective Literary Art Magazine, and this is your chance to be part of it!

Join us in the Workshop to sharpen your sewing skills! In this hands-on class, you’ll learn more experienced sewing methods. You’ll also get to work on an intermediate level project: a pencil pouch! All materials will be provided.
This program will be led by the Friends of the Downey City Library!
Please note that this program is intended for those with intermediate sewing skills, which includes sewing machine experience. We will also be hosting a Beginner Sewing class intended for those with little to no experience on Saturday, May 3rd.

Felting Workshop: Wrist Warmers
Learn the basics of wet felting! In this workshop, participants will make wrist warmers by felting layers of wool together. They will also learn about the different possibilities and applications of wet felting techniques. This program is intended for beginners with no previous experience. All materials will be provided.

Picture Frame Decorating
The Workshop is excited to collaborate with the Studio for their upcoming photoshoot! After receiving a printed photo from the Studio staff, participants will have the opportunity to decorate and take home their own picture frame! Materials will include paint, stickers, charms and more. Materials are limited! Please note that we will limit one frame per participant.
This activity is intended for all ages. It is a drop-in program, meaning registration is not required and space will be offered on a first come, first served basis. In order to participate in this workshop, participants must first take a photo in the Studio’s photoshoot.

Gouache Painting - Step by Step Workshop
Learn how to paint with gouache in the Workshop! In this fully guided class, participants will walk through the steps of painting with gouache paint. Class participants will all be painting the same subject, following along with the instructor. This program is intended for beginners with no previous experience. All materials will be provided.
