The underlying mission of our Adult Literacy Program is to provide community-oriented, one-to-one tutoring to our patrons in a safe and informal environment. By offering completely free-of-charge, confidential literacy instruction to any adult (eighteen years of age and older), our Program seeks to encourage family literacy and promote lifelong learning. Since our Program is designed to meet the needs of the Downey community, we rely upon on and welcome community leadership and support - whether that be through participation or funding.

How Our One-On-One Tutoring Works

The Downey City Library is committed to helping our public learn how to improve their literacy skills. If you understand English, are over eighteen years old and need help reading, you may contact the Adult Literacy program for an assessment. After your assessment is complete, students typically meet with a tutor once a week for ninety minutes. Our Program strives to accommodate our student’s schedules, allowing them to determine the day and time they are available for tutoring.
