Next Gen Library Leaders

Downey City Library Teen Advisory Board

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) at the Downey City Library is dedicated to empowering high school students to become active leaders in their community. Through collaboration with library staff, TAB members contribute their ideas and perspectives to enhance library programs, services, and spaces for teens. Our mission is to create an inclusive, welcoming environment where teens can engage with one another, grow as leaders, and make a positive impact on the library and their community.

Are you a student from 9th to 11th grade who wants to make a difference in your community?

Do you have ideas to help improve teen programs, events, and services at the library? Then we want YOU to join the Downey City Library Teen Advisory Board (TAB)!

 Who Can Apply?
Current freshmen to juniors attending local high schools in the Southeast Los Angeles area (including Downey

and nearby cities).

Program Spotlight

Anime Afternoons

Are you a fan of anime? Love watching simulcasts each week? Anime Afternoons is for you! Watch old and new shows and movies and hang out with friends in the Cormack Room every Wednesday of each month at 3:00pm.

This season, we’ll be showing:

  • My Hero Academia: Vigilantes

  • Wistoria: Wand and Sword

  • BUCCHIGIRI?!


Game Night

Come hang out, play your favorite games, and make new friends. We’ll have classic and new games like Monopoly, Uno, Aggravation, plus puzzles & more for all ages.

Children’s Area: Fun for all ages with board games, card games, puzzles & more! ✨🎲

When: Every 2nd Tuesday of the month at 5pm

Dungeons and Dragons

Join us on Tuesday, February 4th, at 5 PM for an epic Dungeons & Dragons session with local Dungeon Master Cody Mazza! Using the fast-paced, nostalgia-infused Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC) system, these biweekly sessions promise creative puzzles, thrilling exploration, and treasure galore. Perfect for both new and seasoned adventurers, no experience needed!

When: Every Other Tuesday at 5pm, Starting February 4th

Where: The Cormack Room

Theater Thursdays

Do you love watching movies and sharing your opinions? Then Theater Thursdays is waiting for you! Watch classics, discover new movies, and hang out with friends in the Cormack Room the last Thursday of each month for the Teen showing at 3:30pm.

Super Smash Bros Spring Tournament

Calling all gamers! Join us for an action-packed Super Smash Bros Spring Tournament. Test your skills in this bracket-style competition and aim for victory! Spaces are limited, so arrive early to secure your spot in the battle. Spectators are welcome to cheer on their favorite players, and snacks will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to the top three champions. Don’t miss your chance to become a Smash Bros legend!

Looking for a meaningful way to earn community service hours? Volunteering at the library is your chance to make a real impact while gaining valuable experience, developing new skills, and connecting with mentors in your community.

If you're in high school and ready to contribute to something important, fill out our volunteer application. Interested in applying for the Library’s Teen Advisory Board? This is the perfect time to share more about yourself! We’ll contact you when a volunteer opportunity becomes available. Please note that an interview is required before you can begin.
