Happy National Poetry Month!

Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month is a special occasion that celebrates poets’ integral role in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets, marking poetry’s important place in our lives.

Poetry is a special type of literature that manages to pack a ton of emotion and meaning into a very small package. Beyond the standard love poem, writers have been using poetry to express their thoughts and feelings on a variety of topics, from hotly debated social issues of the time to beautiful descriptions of nature. In celebration of National Poetry Month, here are some staff recommendations to help inspire you to write your own:

The Poetry of Robert Frost

Edited by Edward Connery Lathem

Robert Frost is one of the most celebrated poets in American history, and for good reason. Winner of four Pulitzer Prizes, Frost wrote about a wide ranging topics and themes that still resonate with today’s audience. His work is both accessible and resonant, writing about doom and the solitude of humans in nature and society. “The Road Not Taken,” possibly his most famous poem, has been recited several times at graduations, inspirational talks, and even commercials.

“The Poetry of Robert Frost” is a comprehensive compendium that brings together all eleven volumes of his poems, from “A Boy’s Will” through “In the Clearing.” The book has been the standard Frost compendium since its first publication in 1969 and features more than 350 poems with extensive bibliographic information to help contextualize Frost’s writing style.

Auto / Body

by Vickie Vertiz

Bodies are like cars; you should be regularly examining what's underneath, to see what's working and what's not.

That’s an analogy for you, but it doesn’t really come close to describing the complex thread of engaging metaphors, paradoxes, satire & more that is weaved within this collection of poems. Vickie, who is a Ernest Sandeen Prize winner in Poetry, teacher of creative writing, writing for Chicanx Studies, writing for Gender Studies, summer bridge writing for EOP students, and Composition at the University of California, Santa Barbara, does an amazing job of painting rebellion, identities, desires, oppression, and more through her own unique queer and working class Chicanx lens. Take this opportunity to go through a mental auto-body shop and see what’s firing, what needs changing, and what we can learn about ourselves.

Eating Salad Drunk

Feeling confident

Until I log on to Zoom

Is that my real face?

- Ophira Eisenberg

Not all poetry has to be deep and profound, comedy is very much welcome. The Haiku (5-7-5 syllable) format lends itself surprisingly well to comedy: They pack a punch in just three lines, leaving room for surprise, wit, and absurdity. Gabe Henry, manager of the Brooklyn comedy venue Littlefield, collected haikus from some of the biggest names in comedy (Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Mike Birbiglia, Kevin Smith, etc.) into one densely packed book. Sit back, relax, and take your time reading each haiku. Or speed through it, whatever you’d like.

Do yourself a favor and read through one of the volumes. It’ll only take about 30 minutes to burn through it, and you’ll have felt like you’ve explore an entire universe. After all, “The universe is not made of atoms; it’s made of tiny stories” - Muriel Rukeser & Wirrow.
