Adult Literacy Tutor Training

Downey City Library offers free, confidential help for adults looking to improve their reading skills. We need trained literacy tutors to work with our students. All tutors work on a volunteer basis and need 6 hours of training prior to working with students.

Children’s Programs

Children’s Story Times

During the library renovation, Preschool and Bilingual Story Times will be relocated to the City Hall Council Chambers. Baby and Toddler Story Time will be relocated to the First Baptist Church Nursery. Story times are for individual children and their parents/caregivers (no groups or schools, please). If you would like to schedule a special story time or class visit, please call the Children’s Department at (562) 904-7361.

 

 

Preschool Story Time

Join us as we explore the wonder of stories. This story time features sing-a-longs, rhymes and folktales from around the world, all designed to promote your child’s pre-reading skills. No registration required. No food or drinks permitted in the Council Chambers.

Ignite a summer of fun with our Summer Reading Kick Off, Summer Reading Program, Summer Reading Camp and Free Family Shows.


 

Summer Reading Kick Off

Kick off your summer of reading by joining us at the Columbia Memorial Space Center for our Summer Reading Kick Off. Sign up for the summer reading program, enjoy crafts, games, face painting and more!

Enjoy Bubblemania, a show about the science and fun of bubbles with shimmering waves of soap films and the grand finale where children get to go inside a giant bubble!

All programs are free. This event is open to the public. No registration is needed to attend. An adult must be present with children under the age of 13.

Summer Reading Program

Join us at Furman Park for the first week of the Summer Reading Program where kids of all ages can enjoy reading activities and get a chance to earn fun prizes. We will be at Furman Park every Tuesday and Thursday from June 4th to August 1st (except July 4th for the observance of Independence Day).

If you were not able to sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the Summer Reading Kick Off on June 3rd, you can sign up any Tuesday or Thursday during the Summer Reading Program. Also, children entering 1st and 2nd grade, will be able to register for the Summer Reading Camp, which will take place from June 5th to August 7th.

Participants in the program will be able to track their reading progress from home and visit us at the park to collect their prizes. Complete the entire reading log and you’ll be entered in the End of Summer Raffles! One raffle entry per person. All while supplies last.

Children entering 1st and 2nd grade in the fall of 2019 are invited to practice their literacy skills by participating in reading activities, crafts and more.
