As a Literacy Volunteer, you will receive intensive tutor training though a series of workshops. The training you’ll receive will cover literacy theory as well as hands-on instruction through a range of methods and mediums including audio-visual presentations, demonstrations and role playing. Typically, our tutors train for 9 hours before they are prepared to start work as a one-on-one Adult Literacy Tutor. Once trained, our Literacy Tutors are matched with a student and must agree to meet at the library for ninety minute sessions once a week. Literacy Tutors determine the day and time they volunteer.
Before beginning work as a Literacy Tutor all prospective tutors must satisfy the following requirements:
Be 18 years of age or older
Complete 9 hours of literacy training (online and in-person instruction available)
Undergo Live Scan fingerprinting through the City of Downey
If you believe in the importance of reading and would like to share your knowledge and enthusiasm with a student, then our Adult Literacy Program needs you. Please fill out the online form below to get started.
“This little bird reminds me of myself when I entered the Literacy Program. I felt like a little bird cooped up in a cage. With love, teaching, acceptance and patience, I now feel like a free little bird released from the cage. The Sky Is The Limit!”
