Online Databases
 

The Downey City Library offers a large array of online databases. Below is a list of all the available databases:

Search for articles in over 2,000 magazines Search for newspaper articles in the Orange County Register, New York Times, USA Today, Noticias en Español, San Diego Union Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, and Christian Science Monitor.
FirstSearch offers seamless electronic access to dozens of library catalogs and more than 10 million full-text and full-image articles. Literary Reference Center (LRC) is a comprehensive full-text literary reference database that combines information from over 1,000 books and monographs, major literary encyclopedias and reference works, and literary journals. LRC contains detailed information on the most studied authors and their works.
Find fiction like that written by your favorite author. Books can also be searched by reading level, and subject or chosen from theme oriented reading lists. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center provides a complete one-stop source for information on social issues. Access viewpont articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, links to websites, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles.
Each issue provides in-depth coverage of a hot topic with background information, a pro/con discussion, and lists of other resources for more information. Statistics on California including information on population, business, education, health and politics.
Repair information on cars back to 1954. Includes wiring diagrams, service bulletins and recalls. Online version of the popular encyclopedia including an atlas, dictionary, and international edition.
Use this comprehensive database to retrieve in-depth reference content for the core curriculum areas of Literature, History, Biographies, Science, and Social Studies. Contains information for approximately 460,00 international and U.S. national, regional, state and local nonprofit membership organizations in all fields, including IRS data on U.S. 501(c) nonprofit organizations.
Search for newspaper articles in the Los Angeles Times. Learning Express Library is a comprehensive, interactive online learning platform of practice tests and tutorial course series designed to help patrons succeed on the academic or licensing tests they must pass. You'll get immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and an individualized analysis of your results.

AskNow
 

The Downey City Library participates in the "AskNow" program. AskNow is a project of the Metropolitan Cooperative Library System (MCLS), supported by Federal LSTA funding, administered by the California State Library. To find out more about the project, please visit the website at www.asknow.org. MCLS is an association of 31 independent city and special district public libraries located in the greater Los Angeles area, which have agreed to cooperate in providing library service to the residents of all participating jurisdictions. MCLS provides member libraries a resource-sharing network and a means for enhancing the level and diversity of resources available to library users, while reducing duplication of effort. Staff:
The AskNow service is staffed by local reference librarians, MCLS reference librarians, and library school graduate students hired by the Metropolitan Cooperative Library System (MCLS). When you click on the AskNow logo, the librarian who answers your question may or may not be a librarian at the Downey City Library. When the MCLS librarian is unable to provide you with the information you need, we will refer either you or your question to the Downey City Library, the MCLS Reference Center, an expert, or another library that can provide the needed information.
