Mission Statement

To provide free, confidential literacy instruction for any adult, eighteen years of age and older, in the Downey area; to encourage family literacy; and to encourage lifelong learning.

"This little bird reminds me of myself when I entered the Literacy Program. I felt like a little bird cooped up in a cage. With love, teaching, acceptance and patience, I now feel like a free little bird released from the cage. The Sky Is The Limit!"

- Marie Turney, Adult Learner, Downey City Library Adult Literacy Program

Philosophy

The underlying philosophy of our program is to provide a library-based service that offers community oriented, successful one-to-one tutoring in an informal, non-threatening environment. The program is designed to meet the needs of the Downey community, thereby enabling us to draw from community resources in leadership, participation, support and funding.

Become a Tutor

As a Literacy Volunteer, you will receive intensive tutor training though a series of workshops. The training includes audio-visual presentations, demonstrations, role playing, and learning theory. The Tutor Training will be for 13 hours over a period of several days and will prepare you to teach an adult to read better, one-on-one.

You will be matched with an adult learner and will meet at the library for an hour and a half once a week session. You will determine the day and time you would like to volunteer.

Ongoing support is available through monthly tutor support meetings.

If you believe in the importance of reading and would like to share your knowledge and enthusiasm with a student, then the Downey City Library Adult Literacy Program needs you. Reading together builds friendships and changes lives.
